Wonderlic Test Guide

Updated October 26, 2026

The Wonderlic is a short, timed cognitive ability test many employers use when hiring. This guide explains the format, what score is good, and how to prepare so the time limit doesn’t beat you.

What it is

The Wonderlic measures general problem-solving ability with short verbal, math and logic questions. Today it’s often part of Wonderlic Select (formerly WonScore), which can also include untimed personality and motivation questionnaires. The employer decides which parts you take.

The format

The classic Wonderlic cognitive test has 50 multiple-choice questions and a 12-minute time limit, about 14 seconds a question. Verbal, math and logic questions are mixed together, and they get harder as the test goes on. It’s usually taken online on your own device. Your employer’s version may differ, so read the instructions you’re sent.

What’s a good score?

On the classic 50-question test, the average is about 20 correct. There’s no universal passing score: employers compare your result with what predicts success in the job you applied for. A score of 25 or more is above average; demanding jobs may look for higher.

Retakes

Retake rules are set by the employer, not by Wonderlic. Ask your recruiter or hiring contact.

How hard is the Wonderlic?

Most questions aren’t hard on their own. The time limit is the real challenge: most people don’t finish all 50. The questions get harder toward the end, so the early ones are where you bank points.

How to prepare

  1. Learn the question types: word meanings and analogies, number series, word problems, percentages and simple logic.
  2. Practise under the real time limit. Speed comes from recognizing question types quickly.
  3. Don’t get stuck. If a question will take too long, make your best guess and move on, so one hard question doesn’t eat the time you need for easier ones.
  4. Do quick mental math. Practise fractions, percentages and simple multiplication without a calculator.

If you have a week: take a timed 50-question practice test every day or two and review what slowed you down.
